![]() It also supports both local (via self hosting ) and remote vaults. My renewal for Lastpass just came through, and it's now $36 per year. Solutionīitwarden is open source, runs on macOS, iOS, Android and has browser extensions. Removing support for local vaults as a means to an end for forcing subscription accounts as an attempt to increase revenue for 1password has the outcome of yet another lost customer. I am one such loyal customer that has used 1password for years. The backlash of those that care about local vaults will probably more than offset any new customers those at 1password thinks will draw in using the cloud service. Those that spend time and money on password managers are usually savvy enough to know storing ciphertext in any shared cloud environment is inherently insecure for many reasons. I wrote about this a few years ago and a 1password employee dismissed it. A limited version of the algorithm has already been implemented and IBM is already in the process of making quantum cloud services. Once the data is out there, it's just a matter of time before quantum computers using Shor's algorithm decrypts your passwords. Many already have: Norton, LastPass, Keeper, and yes, 1Password in 2020. Its not a question of if a data breach will happen, it's a question of when. Storing passwords in any cloud is insecure, even if the data is encrypted. The choice to remove local vaults is short sighted and will lead to revenue loss.
